Guinness owner Diageo to spend €153m on James’s Gate revamp but smaller breweries will close
GUINNESS owner Diageo is to spend €153m on a revamp of its St James’s Gate Dublin site but 100 jobs will be lost as it closes smaller operations in Dundalk and Kilkenny.
The company will make the newly expanded city centre its Irish brewing base while plans to build a super brewery in Leixlip, Co Kildare have been put on hold.
The development in Dublin will mean changes at the historic home which has been there since Arthur Guinness moved in in 1759.
It will also increase its annual brewing capacity from five to seven million hectolitres.
In a statement, Diageo said 300 construction jobs will be created at James’s Gate with construction to begin in the first half of the year- subject to planning permission.
The smaller breweries will be closed in 2013.
