Frankie says: come on over and visit

Former Ireland hooker Frankie Sheahan was once best known for bulldozing his way through Italian loose forwards. Now he's changed tack and is instead seeking to welcome Italians and other tourist to Ireland.

Sheahan has just been appointed to the board of Failte Ireland by Tourism Minister Leo Varadkar.

Failte Ireland had been seen as highly centred on the hotel sector, according to insiders. Sheahan's appointment marks an increased focus by the group on a wider range of activities, including sports tourism.

Failte Ireland has a special unit which targets international sporting events and tries to persuade their organisers to host the event in Ireland. The recent Solheim Cup and Volvo Ocean race have been among the high-profile wins for Ireland.

"It is an area which hopefully can spearhead the economic recovery," according to the formidable Sheahan.
