MAIRE Geoghegan Quinn was born on September 5, 1950, in Carna, Co Galway.
Her father, Johnny Geoghegan, was a Fianna Fail TD for Galway West from 1954 to 1975 and her godfather, Gerald Bartley, was also a Fianna Fail TD and minister.
She trained as a national teacher in Carysfort College in Blackrock before teaching at Scoil Bhride in Ranelagh in Dublin.
She served as a Fianna Fail TD in Galway West for 22 years (1975-1997) and was a senior cabinet minister on three occasions.
She is married to John Quinn and has two sons, Cormac and Ruairi.
Since 1999, she has served as a member of the European Court of Auditors, which examines how the EU's money is spent.
