TANAISTE Eamon Gilmore says "Europe needs a winner" as he welcomed German Chancellor Angela Merkel's statement that Ireland was a special case for a bank debt deal.

Mr Gilmore maintains it is important that Ireland emerges from the bailout and its banking debt is made sustainable.

"Europe needs a winner," he said.

Mr Gilmore said Mrs Merkel's statement put the question of Ireland being treated as special for a bank debt deal "beyond any doubt".

Mr Gilmore said there was concern in Government over the Chancellor's comments last Friday but the matter was now clarified.

"It's very clear Ireland is being regarded as a special case," he said.

The Tanaiste said the statement last night was "perfectly consistent" with what was agreed at an EU summit on June 29.

"The deal was never off track," he said.

Mr Gilmore was speaking at a meeting of 120 Irish business leaders discussing trade and investment in Africa.
