Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy has paid tribute to the capacity of the Irish people to overcome adversity throughout history.

Speaking to delegates from across Europe at the European People's Party (EPP) Congress, taking place in Dublin, Mr Rajoy said the difficulties encountered by the Irish people are behind them.

"What has been done here in Ireland deserves our respect. It has been very difficult but now things are better," he said.

He added: "The history of this country shoes the great capacity of the Irish people to overcome adversity."

He paid tribute to Taoiseach Enda Kenny and the Government for the "courage" shown by taking many difficult decisions in order to fix the country's economy.
