EMI launches music download lawsuit

By Nick Webb

Sunday November 22 2009

KATY Perry’s record label EMI has launched legal action against UPC over illegal music downloading by Irish consumers.

EMI Ireland claims that UPC, better known as Chorus NTL, is not doing enough to stop illegal downloading, which has squeezed the €100m Irish music industry.

Eircom and smaller internet providers have agreed to block broadband for illegal downloaders and file sharers.

However, UPC, which also provides broadband and telecoms services, is refusing to bow to music industry demands. Moves in Brussels last week may strengthen the UPC case, say sources.
