Eircom chief executive Paul Donovan has said that he is confident the group's new mobile service will significantly enhance revenue for the company and denied the proposition could end up being a "damp squib" in an already-crowded market.
Yesterday the phone company launched its Emobile service. Eircom already owns Meteor, which has just over one million subscribers.
Mr Donovan and his team declined to reveal any targets for Emobile, in terms of customer acquisition or how much is being spent on the launch.
Speaking to the Irish Independent following the launch, Mr Donovan said the new venture was fully supported by the company's majority owner, Singapore Technologies Telemedia.
The new franchise directly employs 100 people throughout Ireland.
