Dunnes is 231st out of world's top 250 shops
Dunnes Stores has been ranked 231st among the world's top 250 retailers in an annual survey published by Deloitte.
The consultancy and accounting firm estimated that Dunnes Stores had 2008 sales of about $3.5bn (€2.5bn based on exchange rates at the time). It also reckoned Dunnes had posted a compound annual growth rate of just 3pc between 2003 and 2008.
It ranked ahead of retailers such as Japanese supermarket chain The Maruetsu and the WaWa convenience store operator in the US. In terms of the estimated turnover figure, Dunnes also ranked just a few places behind US clothing firm Abercrombie & Fitch, as well as Iceland Foods.
But Irish retail industry publication 'Checkout' thinks Deloitte has probably significantly underestimated sales at Dunnes Stores due to its share of the homewares sector, although it is struggling in that area. 'Checkout' estimates Dunnes Stores' annual sales are probably closer to €3bn.
US giant Wal-Mart retained its position as the world's biggest retailer, with 2008 sales of $401bn.
