Dundalk Town Council is offering incentives for new occupants of some vacant commercial premises.
Where town centre properties have been vacant for two years or more, new occupants will be allowed a 50pc reduction on commercial rates payable to the council and a 25pc reduction in the second year.
In addition landlords will be required to reduce rents by an equivalent amount during the first two years of the tenancy. To qualify, occupants must sign a lease of at least 36 months and not owe the council money for a different location.
The scheme will encourage shops, offices, healthcare or daycare. Excluded uses include takeaways; amusement or gaming arcades; betting offices; head shops and nightclubs. The properties involved must also be fully planning-compliant.
