Despite the ongoing economic recovery in Ireland, Dublin lags well behind other global cities when it comes to attractiveness for expats, according to a new survey.

Dublin ranked 34th in the world when it came to attracting expats to live, according to Mercer’s Quality of Living review.

The survey aims to provide multinationals with an insight as to how best to compensate and accommodate their employees in different cities around the world.

While the capital’s ranking may appear low by global standards, Dublin was actually the top-ranked city in Ireland and the UK. London ranked in 40th position, Edinburgh was 45th, with Birmingham coming in 53rd.

“Dublin enjoys high standards of quality of living and remains an attractive location for business,” said Noel O’Connor, a  consultant at Mercer Ireland.

“Some of the factors placing Dublin in the top 50 for quality of living worldwide include an excellent choice of consumer goods, lower levels of air pollution, stable political and strong socio-cultural environment,” Mr O’ Connor added.
