Dole queue eating into work allowance claims
THE Chilean miners rescued last October could be jealously eyeing up the €1,312 flat rate allowance that Irish miners can claim each year.
Yet this allowance -- as well as the flat-rate allowances available to other Irish employees -- is only being claimed by a tiny portion of workers.
About 66,000 workers claimed their flat-rate allowances in the first 10 months of last year, according to the latest figures from the Revenue Commissioners. This is about a fifth of the number of workers who claimed the allowances in 2009. The annual allowance, which can be used to cover an employee's expenses, ranges between €21 and €2,476, depending on the job.
The surge in unemployment is thought to be behind the dive in the numbers claiming the allowance
