Digital TV switch by 2012, says Ryan

COMMUNICATIONS Minister Eamon Ryan is to meet the Broadcasting Authority, ComReg and RTE next week in a bid to kickstart the collapsed Digital Terrestrial Television (DTT) project.

A spokeswoman for the minister said last night he was "disappointed" that the Broadcasting Authority's process to find a commercial DTT operator had failed. She added, however, that public service television would switch over from analogue to the DTT system by the EU's 2012 deadline "come what may".

New worry raised over US recovery

Two sets of figures from the US have sparked worries about the country's economic recovery. The Labour Department said new claims for US unemployment benefits had risen for the first time in five weeks, while the Conference Board's composite index of leading economic indicators fell 0.1pc in April, for the first time in more than a year.

Production is up, reports Kenmare

MINING

Mining company Kenmare Resources told shareholders yesterday that production at its important Moma mine improved in April. Production of ilmenite jumped 14pc to 57,307 tonnes in April compared with the average over the first three months of the year. Production of zircon was up 20pc. The market for titanium continued to improve both in terms of higher demand and pricing, the company added.

PetroNeft narrows its losses to $6.3m

OIL

Siberia-focused oil production and exploration company PetroNeft said its pre-tax loss narrowed last year as it reduced foreign exchange losses on intra-group loans. The Dublin-listed company's pre-tax loss narrowed to $6.3m (€5.1m) last year from a $7.8m loss the previous year. Revenue for 2009 was $509,710. PetroNeft said its production plans at its Russian oil prospects remained on schedule.

Ryanair's 200 jobs go to Germany

AVIATION

Ryanair has confirmed it is to open a €25m maintenance hangar facility at Germany's Frankfurt-Hahn airport. The investment will create up to 200 jobs which Ryanair boss Michael O'Leary claimed could have stayed in Dublin if the Government had intervened to secure the investment.
