Diageo in line to take over whiskey giant
Less than a year after John Teeling sold Cooley Distillery to US drinks giant Beam, it seems that the distillery may change hands once again.
The 'Financial Times' is reporting that Diageo is on the prowl following a failed bid for a Mexican tequila company and may end up swallowing Beam on the rebound to gain control of that company's Jim Beam rye whisky business.
Diageo owns Guinness and Baileys as well as Northern Ireland-based Blackbush but it has pretty much left the Irish whiskey market to Pernod Ricard's Irish Distillers.
If the speculation is right, we could soon see a fight between France and Britain's biggest drink groups for the heart and soul of Irish whiskey.
