SINGER Daniel O'Donnell has issued a huge thanks to Irish people who donated more than €300,000 for cancer research after his wife Majella shaved her head live on television just one day after undergoing her first round of chemotherapy.
The Donegal-based crooner (51), who is currently in the US, posted a message on his official website stating: "Thank you all so much from the bottom of my heart."
He said both he and his wife (53), who has been diagnosed with breast cancer, are "overwhelmed" by the response to her dramatic head-shave during 'The Late Late Show' on RTE One on Friday night, in which the studio audience gave her a standing ovation.
Such was the response that text and phonelines and the website for the Irish Cancer Society crashed under the weight of people trying to donate money.
The lines were up and running again yesterday and donations are continuing to pour in, ICS spokeswoman Grainne O'Rourke said last night.
The response has been overwhelming and officials with the charity will have a better idea today of how much money has been raised.
O'Donnell, meanwhile, said his wife was also overwhelmed with the public support she had received since going public with her battle with cancer.
"She really hopes that her efforts will make a difference," he said.
