US firm West Pharmaceutical Services, a designer and manufacturer of pharmaceutical packaging and delivery systems, plans to expand its global operations by locating its newest plant on a 44-acre site in Waterford.

The investment will be in the region of €100m.

The facility will manufacture packaging components for insulin injector cartridges and other high-value packaging elements for injectable drugs.

West Pharmaceutical says that it expects to have 150 people employed on site when the plant becomes operational in 2018.

The company says that the number of people employed could increase to between 250 and 300 depending on the demand for the products.

It is estimated that an additional 100 jobs will be supported during the construction of the plant, which starts next Tuesday.

West already has a manufacturing and development centre in Dublin where it employs about 230 people.
