The company that operates the controversial Irish Psychics Live premium phone lines last year sustained a 22pc drop in pre-tax profits to €1.7m.

Accounts just lodged by Realm Communications with the Companies Office show that the company's pre-tax profits dropped by €494,000 from €2.24m to €1.74m to the end of April last year.

Company founder and managing director Tom Higgins said yesterday: "We are happy enough with the 2008 results and the 2009 results are also reasonably good." He stated, however, that "there has been a noticeable decline" in calls to the company's premium phone lines as a result of the recession.

He said: "People have less disposable income to be making calls on a service that is primarily for entertainment."

Customers calling from land lines are charged €2.40 per minute for the service.
