US President Barack Obama clearly thinks the shamrock presented to him by the Taoiseach last week will bring him good luck if he plants it in the White House garden -- but sellers of the three-leaf clover haven't had much fortune this year.

Shamrock sales in Ireland came to about €400,000 this year, compared to €450,000 last year, according to industry estimates.

"Sales are down a little bit as there's less money around," said James O'Leary, of the shamrock growers, Irish Plants International.
