Clarke's €2.3m payday
Mike Ashley's shiny tracksuit retail chain Sports Direct is paying Irish golfer Darren Clarke a €2.3m bonus for winning the British open in July.
The chain -- which has a stake in Irish department store Heatons -- revealed the bonus payments when reporting interim results last week. Through Heatons, Sports Direct has an Irish footprint of 23 stores across the country.
Sports Direct sponsors Clarke through its Dunlop brand. The deal provided for a mega bonus on winning any of the four golfing majors.
Former Finance Minister Charlie McCreevy joined the board of Sports Direct earlier this year.
The company is controlled by Mr Ashley, who also owns Newcastle United.
