Irish cinemas will be hoping that Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland, which will be released early next month, will work its magic on cinemagoers here. Ireland had the second-steepest fall in cinema attendance in Europe over the last year, according to a report just published.

The report, by the European Audiovisual Observatory, found the number of Irish cinemagoers slipped by 3.2 per cent last year. Ireland was one of a handful of countries where attendance was down.

Blockbusters such as Avatar and Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs haven't done Irish-made films any favours either, as homegrown films grabbed just 0.2 per cent of admissions last year -- a tenth of what they got in 2008.
