Declan Carlyle has been appointed deputy managing director of Independent Newspapers (Ireland). Mr Carlyle will report to Joe Webb, who was recently promoted to chief executive of INM (Ireland).

Independent Newspapers encompasses all the activities of the group's leading titles; the Irish Independent, the 'Evening Herald', the 'Sunday Independent' and 'Herald AM'.

Mr Carlyle will retain his current responsibilities for all strategic human resources matters across the group.

Commenting on the appointment, Mr Webb said Mr Carlyle had wide experience in all areas of the company's operations and brings a wealth of knowledge and management experience to his new role.

"His influence and impact on the major restructuring of the Irish operations in recent years was immense. In addition, he directed and implemented a key management leadership development programme in the company.

"Declan is very well-equipped to take on this new role and has the requisite experience to steer the company through these challenging times," he added.

Declan Carlyle joined the company in 1976 and operated in a variety of roles including in the transport, circulation sales and distribution areas, prior to being appointed human resources director in 2000.

In recent years, he implemented a significant restructuring of the Irish operations.

Major efficiencies, operational improvements and cost reductions have been achieved under his leadership. A market-leading and innovative approach to outsourcing has formed a key part of this strategy.
