Campaign to demand referendum on proposed EU fiscal compact launched

A NEW campaign designed to demand a referendum on the so-called fiscal compact/treaty designed to rein in European Government spending has been launched.
While it is not yet clear whether a referendum will be necessary to have the new rules enforced, Sinn Fein, The United Left Alliance, the Workers Party and Eirigi are behind the campaign.
A referendum would be necessary if it led to constitutional changes.
Socialist Party MEP Paul Murphy said the treaty would allow unelected bodies like the European Commission and the European Central Bank to control our economic affairs including budgets.
Earlier this week, former German foreign Minister Joschka Fisher warned there would be “extreme consequences” for Ireland if the fiscal compact was rejected.
“You will not end up in heaven,” he told the annual Henry Grattan lecture at Trinity College.
“You will end up in a very different place.”
He said the European Union is on the brink of disintegration and member states face the choice of deeper union or a return to nation states.
