Call for new trade stimulus strategy

THE Irish Exporters Association yesterday called on Enterprise Minister Batt O'Keeffe to move quickly to put in place a new trade and investment strategy.
"We need to sell our way out of recession; we must empower small- and medium-sized businesses to look at export markets and find their best route to market and business expansion," said chief executive John Whelan.
Ireland to benefit from UK tax hikes
CHAMBERS Ireland said yesterday that today's budget in the UK could bring further relief to Irish businesses. The anticipated increase in the UK VAT rate from 17.5pc to 19-20pc, coupled with the recent depreciation of the euro against sterling, provides optimism regarding Ireland's efforts to reduce cost differentials with one of its biggest markets, said chief executive Ian Talbot.
Major conference on building trade
A MAJOR European construction industry conference is due to kick off in Dublin Castle this Friday, with 150 delegates taking part. The conference will examine topics, including private financing of public projects, as well as consolidation in the sector.
Senior staff face axe at Channel 4
CHANNEL 4 is to cut a quarter of its 48 senior managers. Channel 4 said the cuts will be achieved by not replacing current vacancies alongside a "small number of redundancies".
