One artist who won't have to sing for his supper anytime soon is Oscar winner, Glen Hansard.

New accounts filed by Hansard's Plateau Records show that the Dubliner's firm was sitting on a cash pile of nearly €1.5m at the end of November last. The firm recorded a profit of €245,000 last year resulting in accumulated profits increasing to €1.44m.

During the same period, the cash pile jumped by €209,437 to €1.482m - not bad for someone who left school at the age of 13 to pursue a musical career and busked on Grafton Street for the following five years. The singer said his time busking "was the only education I've ever needed".

The Ballymun native achieved worldwide fame in 2008 when he and then girlfriend, Markéta Irglová, above, won an Oscar for the hit song 'Falling Slowly' from the film 'Once'.

The musical, written by Dubliner John Carney, has gone on to a three-year run on Broadway, two years on the West End and has won eight Tony awards. The musical is to commence a seven week stint at the Olympia beginning on July 4th next.

Previous accounts for Hansard's Plateau Records - where he is the sole shareholder - show that the Oscar success has had a positive effect on his firm's bank balance.

The firm's wealth has grown since 2012 when accumulated profits of €534,691 and a cash pile of €537,941 were recorded. The popular Dubliner is set to add to his coffers next month with two sell-out gigs at the Iveagh Gardens in Dublin celebrating 25 years of The Frames. The Frames are also performing a sell-out gig at The Marquee in Cork.

In anticipation of a forthcoming record, Hansard is to embark on an autumn tour that see the 45-year-old play gigs in Italy, Germany, Denmark, Sweden and France.
