Bumper haul for taxman as €320,000 awarded in judgments

Charles Haughey's son-in-law John Mulhern has to pay €425,000
THE taxman has secured almost €320,000 in judgments against two individuals and two companies, according to the latest edition of debt watchdog Stubbs Gazette.
The biggest single collector general judgment is against Tony Howley, described as a "carpet and flooring fitter", with an address at Breaffy, Ballina, Co Mayo. The €91,800 charge was registered in the High Court on August 5.
The next largest amount awarded in favour of the taxman was €84,100, registered against Balbradagh Developments, of Emmet Street, Trim, Co Meath, on August 5, followed by an €82,300 charge registered against businessman Alfie Fynes, of Notre Dame, Darcystown, Balbriggan, on July 31.
The bumper judgments are rounded up by a €58,300 charge against Southside Contract Cleaners, 48 Townsend Street, Dublin 2.
The Revenue Commissioners don't comment on judgments, but typically pursues individuals through the courts when tax has been underpaid.
Recent weeks have seen a wave of hefty taxman judgments, with several six-figure sums awarded in favour of the taxman, including a €425,000 charge against Charles Haughey's son-in-law John Mulhern, registered in mid-July.
The latest edition of Stubbs also details a number of lower-level judgments in favour of the Collector General, including one for €26,800 against a Cork publican and one for €17,900 against a Cork "retailer of musical instruments".
Meanwhile, Monaghan-based Castle Drylining and Insulation Services had a €77,100 judgment registered against it by Lafarge Plasterboard (Ireland) on July 31.
