Budget shopping spree bags bargains
One Direction perfume, luxurious watch gift sets and lightsaber toys.
Not what you'd expect for €50 - but then again, this was the street stalls in Dublin.
The Irish Independent sent me out - clad in my finest Christmas jumper - to see how far €50 would go among the stalls dotted across the city centre. After an hour of haggling on Henry St, €50 secured me two lightsabers, a 'magic ball', three rolls of wrapping paper, and two Mars selection boxes.
That was not all, however. I was also carrying a One Direction lady's perfume gift set, a men's fashion gift set (including a watch, cuff links and three ties), various decorations and even a yellow 'emoji' cushion.
The One Direction perfume set and the plush 'New York London' gift set cost a total of €20 from an unnamed vendor. Online, the Irish Independent found the same products would cost €67 - a price difference that nearly matched my budget.
Stall operators said that they often came back year after year, although the work was highly seasonal. Shopper Andrea Edwards, from Crumlin, said: "I shop from both the stalls and the shops, you can find good bargains."
Turns out that €50 can go a long way in Dublin.
