Brokers bring back free lunch

Dublin business hacks were spoiled for dining options yesterday, with both Davy and Merrion Stockbrokers hosting festive lunches.

John Conroy's Merrion hosted a wallet-shattering Christmas 'do' at Patrick Guilbaud's eponymous eatery on Merrion Street.

Over on Dawson Street, meanwhile, Tony Gary plumped for a working lunch featuring sensible dining around Davy's impressive fifth-floor boardroom.

We haven't yet figured out what the choices say about the priorities of either house, but we're glad as ever to slay that old adage that there's no such thing as a free lunch.

However, the one thing common to both was a general air of moderation, at least as far as alcohol was concerned.

It's a big change from the days when three martinis and the promise of a hangover were essential features of lunch with a stockbroker.

It seems those days are gone.
