Around one in four SME respondents had no online presence at all, and three in four of those said they didn't intend to build one as there was no need.

IEDR chief executive David Curtin said Irish SMEs have been improving their "digital health", but that problems remain.

He said Irish consumers spent €6bn on e-commerce last year, but only a small amount of that was spent in Ireland with UK and European retailers reaping the benefits.

He said only 35pc of Irish SMEs can process online payments, and 42pc can take online orders.
