The BBC’s top programmes will be available online globally soon. Up until now only British residents could use the hugely popular facility.

The iPlayer showcases all its top BBC1 and BBC2 programmes on demand.

The Beeb has yet to decide on a subscription rate, but it is expected to be in the region of €7 per month to view the content on iPads.

It will be launched in Europe on a trial basis first, with the global roll out expected later in the year.

The Corporation also hopes to make it available on devices other than the iPad at a later date.

The BBC iPlayer was first launched in December 2007.
