Bank of Ireland denies takeover rumours

Bank of Ireland has moved to end any speculation that it is a takeover target

Friday September 19 2008

Bank of Ireland Plc surged 65 percent in Dublin trading today on unfounded speculation that Banco Santander SA may bid for the country's second biggest bank.

The Bank of Ireland has 'categorically' confirmed that it has not received any approach from Banco Santander.

It made the statement following earlier speculation that the Irish bank may be a takeover target. The rumours sent the share price surging by 65pc on the Irish stock market earlier today.

But by lunch-time the bank had moved to end the rumours, saying that it had not received any approach from Santander, nor had it entered any talks with the bank.
