Ballina marina jobs prospect
Wednesday November 28 2007
PUBLIC consultation on the €60m Lough Derg shoreline development at Ballina, Co Tipperary began last night with a project that is expected to create 70 jobs.
It is estimated that the tourism project will benefit the local economies of Ballina and Killaloe up to €6m annually and David Lehane of Eclipse Developments said the group will invest €60m in the water facility which would take two years to complete if the project is given the go-ahead by the authorities.
Residents in the area are already questioning the size of the planned marina.
The marina would consist of 220 berths and radically transform the old facility on the eastern side of Lough Derg.
Included in the marina plans are a boat workshop, pump outstation and wi-fi facilities for those using the facility.
The ambitious plans must negotiate their way through the relevant planning authorities and have still to be submitted to North Tipperary County Council.
Mr Lehane said the plans will be lodged with the local authority in the next few weeks after consultation with residents.
