Balfour, CLG win €500m gas deal
A €500m contract with Bord Gais Networks has been clinched by a consortium including UK firm Balfour Beatty and Dublin-based CLG Developments.
The contract will run over nine years and is for the installation and maintenance of gas transmission and distribution networks across the country. The companies are poised to begin the work in the new year.
Concerns were raised during the summer over Balfour Beatty's safety record after it emerged it was named a preferred bidder by Bord Gais Networks for the massive contract.
But a Bord Gais Network's spokesperson said yesterday that the company was "very comfortable" with Balfour Beatty, having reviewed its safety record and other issues as part of the tender process. The tender process has taken over a year to complete. The spokeswoman said that a decision had been taken to narrow the contract base to one main provider.
The new contract includes all the day-to-day upkeep of the network, as well as activities such as meter installation and meter reading. It's believed a number of international companies expressed interest in the tender.
