Anger over state scheme refusal
Exports
Monday November 23 2009
THE Irish Exporters' Association (IEA) yesterday slammed the Government's refusal to launch a state-backed credit insurance scheme.
Over the weekend, it emerged that Enterprise Minister Mary Coughlan had told the exporters the proposed scheme would be "too expensive and of very limited impact". IEA boss John Whelan yesterday said that Ms Coughlan's decision was based on the flawed reasoning that the scheme was limited because it largely related to agri-food exports to the UK. "This shows a total lack of understanding of the export sector by the Tanaiste," said Mr Whelan. This sector, though only accounting for €14.3bn of exports (less than 10pc of total exports), employs half of all workers in the export sector.

THE Quinn Group has successfully offloaded a radiator plant in Lancashire, England, to developer Salmon Harvester. Quinn stopped using the Leigh-based plant last year, transferring production to Newport in Wales. Local press shows the 12.7-acre site has been sold in recent months to facilitate a £50m retail and leisure development by Salmon Harvester. A spokesman for the Quinn family last night said he had "no comment to make", adding that Quinn ceased production in Leigh "ages ago".
EMR fulfils €4.5m digital TV contract
media
MEATH company EMR Integrated Solutions is celebrating the successful completion of its €4.5m contract to provide infrastructure for troubled next-generation TV system DTT. EMR has now provided RTE's networks division with high-speed communications links that connect 24 broadcast and TV sites with studios in Donnybrook, Cork, Limerick, Sligo and Donegal. The network will be central to the roll-out of Digital Terrestrial Television -- more commonly known as DTT -- which is lined up to replace traditional analogue services. RTE isn't keen to go ahead with public-service DTT until the commercial project is also ready to go live, leaving the launch date up in the air.
