In brief: O'Kane appointed as editor of 'The Star'

MICHAEL O'Kane (below) has been appointed editor of 'The Irish Daily Star'. A native of Dublin, Mr O'Kane (44) joined 'The Star' as news editor in 2002 from RTE.

Mr O'Kane's career in journalism commenced with the 'Irish Press' in 1990. He joined RTE in 1992, spending 10 years covering a wide range of stories from the peace process to the Afghanistan war. In 2007 he was promoted to deputy editor (news) and he recently completed a Diploma in Media Studies from the Scandinivian International Management Insitute in Copenhagen.

"The Star newspaper attracts a huge readership and support right across Ireland and I'm very pleased to lead a team of completely committed journalists," said Mr O'Kane."We are determined to produce, day-in and day-out, the best newspaper in the country and we are entirely devoted to the interests of our readers and advertisers," he added. Mr O'Kane succeeds Ger Colleran who has been appointed managing director.

Sherry Fitz quits London market property

ESTATE agent Sherry FitzGerald has pulled out of the London market with the sale of its stake in a UK property agent. The sale of its interest in Marsh & Parsons to LSL Property Services was first mooted at the start of the month. The deal formally closed on Thursday.The completion of the sale is revealed in the group's 2010 accounts which showed a profit before tax of €2.52m for the year.

Probe into Ryanair stake suspended

A PROBE into Ryanair's ownership of a near 30pc stake in Aer Lingus by the UK's Office of Fair Trading (OFT) has been suspended until an appeals court rules next year whether the watchdog launched the investigation on time. The OFT originally sought to begin its investigation over a year ago, when it said it wanted to determine whether Ryanair's holding in Aer Lingus had resulted in a "relevant merger situation".
