Young farmers set for €14m aid top-up
Young farmers are to receive a top-up when the €13.7m slice of Ireland's aid monies for the dairy and pig sector are being distributed, it has been confirmed.
Macra president Sean Finan welcomed the decision announced by Agriculture Minister Simon Coveney to deliver the extra monies to young farmers in the industry.
However, Mr Finan who addressed the Macra Annual Conference in Co Cork over the weekend stressed the income volatility has been and continues to be a major concern for those starting out in the profession.
Mr Finan called on Agriculture Commissioner Phil Hogan to set out clearly how young farmers can access funds through the European Investment Bank.
He said a clear view was needed on how the money could be "funnelled into into young farmer hands here in Ireland".
Mr Hogan said said work was underway to develop financial instruments to deliver credit to young farmers with better repayment conditions.
