Well-fleshed lambs in demand

The mart trade was strong throughout the past week with well-fleshed lambs keenly sought. Prices for them hit a high of €77 over the weight in the south yesterday.

Typically, around the country, prices for the over-50kg lambs ranged from €52-65 over the weight.

Lambs less than 50 kg were selling for €50-60 over, with store prices varying from €40-60 with the €1/kg. Ewes scanned in lamb sold to €165. Ewe lambs made up to €140, while heavy culls made €100-125/hd.

The three marts contacted yesterday morning all reported big sales and good demand.

Fermoy was probably the pick of the three where good heavy butcher lambs of 50-58kg were making from €56-77 over their weight. The 45-50kg lamb was selling for €50-68 over.

At Kilkenny Mart, the butcher types were ranging from €60-66 with the weight. Factory lambs sold for €50-60 over, while stores made €55-61 over the €1/kg.

Nicely fleshed lambs sold for €54-64 over in Athenry.

There was an improved trade of €3-5/hd for the 1,250 sheep presented for sale at Baltinglass Mart. The heavier type lamb of 50-60kg was selling for €107-118 each. Lambs from 45-50kg made €100-115/hd, while stores ranged from €60-95 each. Suffolk-cross ewe lambs made up to €140. Prices for ewes scanned in lamb varied from €125-165, with cull ewes selling for €85-125.

There were 1,050 sheep on offer at Tullow Mart. Fat lambs were up €2/hd making €53-65 over the weight or €98-115/hd. Store lambs were also up by €2-3 and sold for €41-60 over in a price range of €84-102 each. Cast ewe prices ranged from €64-118/hd.

Smaller numbers of sheep was the story from Mountbellew. Factory lambs, ewe lambs and stag ewes remained a firm trade, with a slightly easier trade for lighter under-fleshed lambs. Lambs for slaughter were making from €55-64 over the weight. Stores sold for €50-58 over. Well-leshed cull ewes made €85-126/hd. Second crop ewes scanned at two lambs/ewe sold for €144.

Sheep numbers were similar to the previous week at Dowra Mart. Trade was also similar except for the backward store lambs which were harder sold. Good ewe lambs for breeding made from €100-125 each, while the forward stores sold from €70-95. Lighter stores made from €40-65/hd. Cull ewes for feeding ranged from €45-75 each, with a few pens of heavy ewes making from €75-105.

Blackface mountain breeding ewes sold for €60-85 at Maam Cross Mart. The culls made €36-75 each. Cross-bred lambs were making €1.90-2.15/kg. The mountain lamb prices ranged from €35-52/hd.
