Veg growers facing a compensation battle

Potato and vegetable growers stand to receive just a fraction of the compensation claims which were lodged with the Department of Agriculture due to losses this spring.
The applications for compensation followed severe crop losses during the cold snap in December, January and February.
The Department has indicated that it will not be in a position to state how much is to be paid in compensation to growers until all claims have been processed.
However, a Department spokesman admitted that a substantial number of applications had been received and a sliding scale reduction will be imposed on compensation claims.
The rate of the sliding scale is currently being finalised, the spokesman said.
The Department reiterated that, in accordance with EU State Aid rules, aid will be confined to actual losses, will be conditional on more than 30pc of the crop being destroyed and will be subject to limitations on the level of aid.
