Trade holding up even with record numbers at sales

Large sales have been the norm over the past week. Despite those big numbers, the trade varied from steady to improved. Cull ewes, factory and butcher lambs held their own, while there was strong trading for all types of breeding stock and store lambs. Tops for the ewe hoggets was €236. Lambs for slaughter ranged from €45-62 over the weight. Cull ewes made up to €138. Strong farmer buying for stores resulted in prices of €2-2.40/kg.
At Athenry Mart yesterday, the heavy lambs made €54-63 over the €1/kg. Ewe lambs sold for up to €65 over, while stores made €44-56 over the weight.
A big and good sale was seen at Fermoy, as heavy lambs over 50kg sold for €50-67 over the weight. Lambs of 45-50kg made €48-62 over.
Dowra Mart had another big entry of 4,400 sheep last Saturday and reported a brisk trade for all lots.
The best of the forward store lambs made €75-95 each, while the top pens of ewe lambs sold for €115-145 each.
Butcher and factory lambs made €90-115.
Butcher and factory lambs at Enniscorthy sold for €94-110, or €48-60, over the weight. Stores prices ranged from €78-93 or €45-55 over the €1/kg.
Ewe hoggets made €165-195. The heaviest of the cull ewes made €110-125 and lighter lots sold for €50-90 each.
