An 18-month-long saga has finally come to an end for a Wexford farmer when the 21-year-old man who drove his €47,000 tractor into the sea was sentenced to a year-and-a-half in prison.
Nigel Kennedy, who had 65 previous convictions, pleaded guilty at Wexford Circuit Criminal Court to damaging property of Kenneth Leacy at Curracloe Beach on December 12, 2009.
The court heard that Mr Kennedy stole the 2005-reg John Deere 6820 in Boolavogue before travelling to Curraclose Beach where he drove it into the sea. The 135hp tractor was not recovered from the sea until the following day.
Mr Leacy, who farms a mixed dairy, drystock and contracting enterprise, said because the insurance company had only paid out €40,000 as compensation, he had suffered €7,000 loss on the tractor.
