Tough trade at Listowel

TRADE in dairy heifers and young cows at Listowel Mart was tougher than expected.
With many dairy farmers on the brink of a superlevy, bidding for the 70 spring-calving was limited to €1,000-1,450/hd on Wednesday.
Demand for heifers from England and Northern Ireland did not materialise, which also exacerbated the slow trade.
Mart manager Barney O'Connell said demand for dairy cows was "not great", with the top prices reserved for purebred registered young heifers due to calve down in February and March next year. Prices for older cows were closer to €1,000/hd.
The next dairy sale at Listowel takes place tomorrow, with 42 cows booked in.
