Meanwhile, traders report a steady market for straw despite the ongoing difficulties in the mushroom sector.

While the price of 8x4x4 bales has slipped to €30-35/bale, back around €5/bale on last year, traders maintained that strong demand from farmer buyers in the west and North had stabilised prices.

The increased level of chopping at the start of the harvest reduced supply. In addition, tillage growers report livelier demand from livestock farmers keen to increase the dry-matter content of animal feed.

"In the last few weeks we have seen straw leaving sheds, which would seem to indicate that stocks are beginning to get tight," one Kildare tillage grower said.

Round bales of straw are making from €12 to €14.
