Tillage group to hold first meeting

A new body to represent grain growers is to hold its inaugural meeting at the Horse and Jockey, Co Tipperary, tomorrow evening.
Farmers involved in the Grain Ireland project said they intended to vigorously lobby on behalf of the tillage sector. However, they insisted they did not see themselves as operating in opposition to the IFA.
A grower involved with the body said the organising committee intended to test the level of support for the idea at tomorrow evening's meeting which starts at 8pm.
A perception that the cereal industry was on the floor was cited by the Grain Ireland supporter as the primary reason for seeking to set up the new organisation.
"A lot of growers think the business is going down the toilet. There are men who can't pay for last year's inputs not to mind buy this year's," he explained.
