There is mounting speculation of movement on a review of the Quality Payment System (QPS) or beef grid for cattle.

There were unconfirmed reports this week that the Department of Agriculture had written to all participants in the Beef Roundtable process regarding the cattle pricing mechanism.

Few details were available as we went to press, but one industry source said any Department move was likely to increase the pressure on the factories and IFA to agree to a review of the QPS.

Both the ICMSA and ICSA have repeatedly called on the Minister for Agriculture, Simon Coveney, to initiate a review of the QPS, as was agreed in last year's Beef Roundtable agreement.

While the agreement stated that the Department and Teagasc would facilitate a review of the QPS, Minister Coveney has insisted that any such initiative would be up to the factories and IFA who originally agreed the introduction of the beef grid.
