Suckler event to pack Elphin
Published 23/08/2011 | 05:00
All roads lead to Elphin Mart on Saturday when many of the leading players in the cattle industry descend on the small town in north Roscommon for an all-day exhibit on suckler production.
IFA president John Bryan will open proceedings, while well-known Italian exporter David Garavelli will then outline the type of cattle he is interested in buying and summarise what he expects for the autumn trade.
The lessons learned from the 16 Better Beef Farms will be outlined and this will be followed in the afternoon by a session on the beef sector, with Dawn Meats' Paul Nolan, Bord Bia's Gerard Brickley and Teagasc's Bernard Smyth discussing the economics of the beef sector.
During the day, local farmers will exhibit both weanling and store stock. Three leading buyers and importers will then describe the type of cattle they are buying this autumn and what they see as the outlook for the trade going forward.
The all-day event is organised by Elphin Mart in conjunction with Teagasc. There is a cover charge of €20, which includes a hot lunch, and pre-booking is strongly advised as places are limited to 500.
For anyone interested in attending, booking should be made through Elphin Mart on 071 963 5061 and Teagasc, Roscommon, on 0906 26166.
The day kicks off at 9.15am.
