Sluggish week with only forward stores bucking general price slide

It was a sluggish week, with almost all categories of stock slipping in price. Forward store bullocks were the only group to show positive movement, with a 2-5c/kg increase pushing them to €1.90-2.40/kg.

Light stores sold for €2-2.55/kg while the heavier types over 600kg made 1.90-2.25/kg. Plain steers sold for €1.40-1.65/kg.

Heifers were generally back by 2-7c/kg. Most continental types were sold in the range €2.00-2.40/kg, while the poorer quality lots moved at €1.70-1.80/kg.

All weanlings were back by 2-6c/kg. Light continental bulls sold for €2.10-2.80/k, while bulls over 400kg sold for €2-2.40/kg.

Plain bulls made €1.50-1.85/kg. Light heifer weanlings sold for €2.30-2.80/kg with the heavier lots making €2.15-2.55/kg. Lesser quality heifers made €1.90-2.00/kg.

Ballinakill mart had around 300 cattle on offer and recorded a lively trade for all fancy store cattle. Bullock prices were up by about €30/hd.

Friesian cull cows were a sluggish trade at €1.20-1.90/kg. Heavy steers weighing over 700kg sold for €1.80-2.25/kg. Forward stores sold for €1.75-2.35/kg, while lighter types moved at €1.70-2.40/kg.

Beef heifers made €1.80-2.30/kg. Stores sold for €1.65-2.10/kg. Prices for weanling bulls ran from €1.85/kg to €2.20/kg, while heifer weanlings sold for €1.60-2.25/kg. Cull cows made €1.20-1.90/kg.

Kilkenny reported a bit more bite to the trade, perhaps due to tighter supplies of just 730hd.

Fleshed cattle fit to slaughter were especially scarce. Steers weighing over 600kg made €2.00-2.20/kg or €620-965 over the weight. The 500-600kg bullocks sold for €1.80-2.35/kg while lighter lots made €1.60-2.90/kg.

Factory heifers made €2-2.45/kg or €600-810 with the weight. Butcher types moved at €1.80-2.25/kg. The stores sold for €2.10-2.70/kg or €250-520 with the €/kg. Continental cull cows sold for €1.70-2.15/kg while Friesian culls made €0.80-1.70/kg.

Top class bulls over 600kg sold for €430-895 over the weight at Raphoe Mart.

Beef bullocks sold for €630-790 over. Stores made €430-755 with their weight. In the heifer ring, beef heifers made €400-1,065 and stores made €300-735 over the weight. Cull cows sold for €600-2,140/hd.

Enniscorthy had 120 suck calves offered for sale. Continental bull calves sold for €250-450, while coloured heifers made €220-415/hd.

Friesian bulls sold for €75-250/hd. Hereford and Angus bulls made €230-440 while the heifers moved at €200-400/hd.

Beef bullocks made €700-1,050 with their weight and stores made €300-800 over. Fleshed heifers sold for €550-950 with the weight.

The stores made €310-600 over. Cows fit for slaughter sold for €400-550 with the €/kg. Cows for further feeding made €150-350 over.

Dowra Mart had 480 cattle on offer last Saturday, where trade was described as steady. Quality lots sold particularly well on the day. Store bullocks over 500kg made €1.80-2.40/kg with the lighter stores selling for up to €2.60/kg.

PURE-BRED

Weanling bulls over 450kg made €1.70-2.50/kg. The lighter bulls sold for €1.80-3.00/kg. A few fancy Charolais bulls made up to €3.30/kg.

Weanling heifers under 300kg made €2.00-3.00/kg. Store heifers sold for €1.60-2.70/kg. In-calf continental heifers made €1,500-2,400 with this top price paid for a three-year-old Limousin heifer calving to a pure-bred Limousin bull next month.

Heavy continental steers sold for €2-2.21/kg in Tuam. Steers weighing 450-600kg made €2.22-2.42/kg. Lighter continental steers sold for €2.17-2.42/kg.

Heavy Limousin and Charolais heifers made €1.96-2.23/kg. Heifers weighing 400-500kg sold for €2.07-2.32/kg. Light heifers made €2.19-2.60/kg.

Weanling bulls sold for €2.22-2.96/kg and heifer weanlings sold for €2.18-2.50/kg. Heavy cull cows sold for €1.57-1.84/kg.

Maam Cross Mart reported a firm trade, with steers selling for €1.85-2.80/kg. The heifers moved at €1.60-2.75/kg. Weanlings made €1.60-2.80/kg. Cull cows made €1.25-1.95/kg.

Sucklers with a calf at foot sold for €920-1,130/unit.

Bullocks in Ballymote weighing under 400kg sold for €390-610 over their weight. The 400-500kg lots made €425-650 over.

Heifers under 400kg sold for €300-415 with the €/kg. The 400-500kg types sold for €350-500 over while heavier lots made up to €615 with the weight.

Cull cows sold for €290-435 over their weight. In the weanling section, bulls under 300kg sold for €325-600 over the €/kg.

Lots over 300kg sold for €350-550 with the weight. Weanling heifers under 300kg made €300-350 over their weight, while 300-400kg lots sold for €365-400 over. Heavier lots made up to €600 over the €/kg.
