THE South of Ireland Suffolk Sheep Society held its premier show and sale at Roscrea Mart on Friday and Saturday where they reported an 80pc clearance of ram lambs at an average price of €920/hd -- although the prices didn't always match the prizes.
Quite a number of lamb rams made €2,000-5,000/hd, while the Supreme Champion of the show shown by Arthur O'Keeffe sold for €1,700 to Mr Kevin McDermott of Carndonagh, Co Donegal.
Susan O'Keeffe's reserve champion ram lamb made €1,300. Top price of the day, 5,000gns, went to Tom and Jeff Bailey, Batterstown, Co Meath, for a ram lamb sold to Jimmy Douglas of Aberdeenshire. The second highest price of the day, 4,300gns, was achieved by William R Wilson for his ram lamb, which was purchased by David Inman of Melton, Mowbray, UK.
The winner of the Novice Class was a lamb shown by Letterkenny breeder Seamus Browne and sold for €2,900gns to Eamon Duffy, Co Meath.
Female champion went to Patrick O'Keeffe for his Shearling ewe, which was sired by Castlewellan Sportsman and sold to Tom and Jeff Bailey for 1,050gns. Matt Pearse from O'Brien's Bridge, Co Clare, won the reserve for his ewe lamb sired by Fermoyle Brooker. She sold for €600 to Co Wexford breeder Rory Skerritt.
