Eight of the top young Simmental bulls in the country will compete for the special Ploughing bull title in Athy today.

Taking place at 2pm, the class will feature the best young bulls selected from various club finals and summer shows across the country this year.

The Irish Simmental Society exhibit will also feature all the champions and reserve champions from the National Simmental Show, held in Tullamore.

Simmental was ranked as the most profitable breed for suckler beef production in recent ICBF evaluations, according to Peadar Glennon from the society.

"In fact, in the most recent evaluation run, nine out of the top 10 AI bulls ranked on Suckler Beef Value were Simmental," he said.

"The Simmental exhibit will display the quality of cattle which has the potential to leave higher returns for farmers."

The society will also be advertising a number of commercial suckler heifer sales that will be taking place in the autumn.

These include: Fermoy Mart on October 1; Kilkenny Mart on October 14; Ballymote on October 25; and Gort on November 4.

Meanwhile, the Simmental Premier Show and Sale will take place in Roscommon on Saturday, November 6. All animals at this sale will be tested to an export standard.
