A star-studded 14-month-old, Westmeath bred Charolais bull topped the Irish Charolais Society Show and Sale at GVM Mart, Tullamore on Saturday when the hammer fell at €6,400 for the champion.
Exhibited by Aidan Farrell, Moate, 'Williamstown Jude' was judged overall Champion of the Show after winning the class for animals born August 11 to September 4, 2014 and was purchased by Jonathan Kelly, Limavaddy, Co Derry.
His sire 'Cavelands Adam' was purchased by the breeder for €10,000 and his dam was bred in the 'Williamstown' herd, a combination of genetics that produced a superb bull studded with stars.
The 'Williamstown' herd also produced the winner of the class for bulls born June 14 to August 4, 'Williamstown JA'.
Reserve champion was 'Rattigan Jeff ET', bred and exhibited by David Rattigan, Main Street, Elphin, Co Roscommon, another heavily star adorned bull, winner of the class for bulls born September 5 to September 28, 2014 and purchased by Martin Kenny, Cams, Cloverfield, Co Roscommon for €5,000.
Customers for bulls among the large ringside attendance at the sale had their eyes closely fixed on the star ratings of the bulls on offer and bidding, in general, reflected the genetic merit projected for the progeny as measured by the ICBF evaluation.
Several of the bulls sold for €5,000 or over, while the hammer fell on a minority of the bulls, mainly bulls with lower star ratings, at back to €2,000 with some leaving the ring without reaching their reserve.
Bulls born March 3 - April 14
