The lamb trade in some marts was tougher last week but there was a good start to this week's sales.

It was a similar story for the cull ewes, while ewes scanned in-lamb and ewes with lambs at foot met a lot of interest and fetched strong prices.

However, despite the factory price apparently under pressure this week, yesterday's mart sales reported some excellent prices -- lambs sold at Fermoy Mart made up to €73 with their weight.

Well-fleshed lambs over 50kg made €56-66 over at Athenry.

Tullow Mart had 1,200 sheep on offer. Prices were steady for fat and store lambs, and nicely fleshed lots made €57-64 over. Stores sold for €38-58 and a smaller entry of cull ewes made €46-96/hd. In-lamb ewes sold for €122-181 each.

At Mountbellew Mart on Saturday, trade was easier for stag ewes and lambs. Well-fleshed in-lamb ewes and ewes with lambs at foot made €52-61 over, while lighter lambs sold for €40-50 over. Cull ewes sold for €64-110/hd.

Trade was strong in Baltinglass as lambs weighing 45-50kg made €47-57 over.

The quality of the 700 sheep on offer at Dowra was less than previous weeks and this was reflected in prices on the day, where store lambs made €70-90, while some pens of dry-ewe lambs made up to €115 each.
