Both commercial and pedigree sheep breeders have coveted cups to win at Virginia this year, with the Hugh Faulkner Cup for the champion crossbred sheep and the Patrick Keoghan Cup for pedigree sheep breeders.
Future sheep breeders can test their stockmanship skills in the sheep stockperson competition for under-16s and there is also a competition for pet lambs for anyone who has invested their time in an orphan this year.
Prize money to a total value of more than €2,000 will be awarded in sheep categories, along with a large number of product prizes.
Sheep breeds on display this year include Suffolk, Texel, Charollais and Vendeen, as well as crossbred animals.
Not to be ignored, the competitions for goats, poultry, eggs and farm and garden produce are expected to receive a high number of entries as interest in smallholdings has increased dramatically in the past year.
