The mart trade was steady over the past week around the country. Managers in a number of marts reported a limited supply of finished stock.
Well fleshed cull cows were a very lively trade and the R grade types was making over €2/kg with up to €2.20/kg paid. Kilkenny even reported a tops of €2.10/kg for a Friesian cull cow. Steers and heifers fit for slaughter were making from €2.00-2.50/kg. A wide variation of suckler cows ranged from €1,000-2,000.
Dairy heifers and cows generally moved for €1,000-1,500. Friesian bull calves made from €120 up to €300 for older, stronger lots. Most of the Continental bull calves were making between €300-400. The heifer calves made from €250-400.
There were 630 head of stock at Balla Mart where strong demand, especially for heifers and weanling bulls, drove prices up by €20-30/hd. Bullocks were steady with the heavy types selling for €1.25-2.57/kg while lighter lots made from €2.00-2.83/kg.
The best of the heifers sold for €2.00-3.21/kg. Plainer heifers made from €1.57-1.90/kg. A number of top quality weanling bulls exceeded the €3/kg. The majority of the rest moved between €2-3/kg. The strong weanling heifers were also making from €2.00-3.00. Sucklers hit a high of €1,700 for a two year-old Limousin heifer due to calve next month to an AI Limousin bull. The tops for the cull cows was €2,380 for a heavy U grade BB cow.
Despite a big sale of 710 head of cattle in Kilkenny Mart, the beef animals were in short supply. The total number included over 100 cull cows and 100 sucklers. Heavy bullocks over 600kg made from €2.15-2.70/kg. Steers from 400-600kg sold for €1.90-2.50/kg. Lighter stores ranged from €1.80-2.98/kg. Butcher heifers were selling for €1.85-2.30/kg with the factory lots making between €2.20-2.60/kg. Stores made from €2.00-2.50/kg. Continental cull cows varied from €1.50-2.18/kg. Friesian cull cows sold from €1.20-2.10/kg. In-calf suckler cows made from €1,200-1,900. Pedigree Limousin cows and heifers in-calf made from €1,800-2,320 each.
The good heavy bulls were making from €685-1,265 in Raphoe mart. Beef bullocks sold for €770-1,130. Stores made from €380-840 over. Fat heifers were selling for €420-950. Stores made from €360-680 over the €/kg. The tops in the cull cow section made €1,950. Stores sold back to €700.
Continental steers over 500kg at Tuam Mart were making from €2.00-2.40/kg. Heifers in the main sold for €2.00-2.50/kg. Weanling bulls over 400kg traded for €2.25-2.53/kg. Lighter lots made from €2.30-3.00/kg. Weanling heifers made from €2.17-2.57/kg. Cull cows topped out at €1,500.
Cows with a calf at foot were making €1,220-1,480 down in Enniscorthy while in-calf cows moved at €1,080-1,330. Calved dairy heifers made from €1,050-1,450. Heifers due to calf over the next two months were making €1,000-1,400. Bullocks fit for slaughter sold for €650-1,050 over the weight. Stores made €400-860 over. The beef and butcher heifers traded for €650-1,000 with the €/kg while lighter store heifers made from €350-600 over. Prices for cull cows varied from €500-1,300.
At their calf sale of 140 head, the Continental bulls sold for €375-515. The heifer calves made from €280-460.
Friesian bull calves ranged from €135-300. Hereford and Angus bull calves were selling for €265-465 while the heifers made from €200-440.
The best of the young fit cull cows made from €1.70-2.20/kg at Dowra Mart. Older, plainer cows were making from €1.00-1.60/kg.
Carnew Mart had 650 on offer and reported very good demand. Beef and forward store steers were making from €720-1,150 with their weight. Lighter stores sold for €410-850 over the €/kg. Beef heifers ran from €620-1,065 with the weight while stores made from €350-755 over. Suckler cows with a calf at foot ranged from €1,250-1,980. In-calf cows sold for €1,050-1,850. Heavy cull cows were making from €400-850 with their weight. Cows for further feeding made €70-450 over.
Springers were making from €1,080-1,110 at Ballymote mart. Well-made weanling bulls between 250-315kg sold for €300-460. The heifer weanlings around the 300kg made up to €420 with their weight but most of them at €250-300 with the €/kg. Continental steers over 500kg were selling for €500-700 with their weight. The good Continental heifers made from €250-600 over.
Suckler heifers just calved or on the point of calving in Ballybay sold for €1,300-1,445.
